 Effective, January 15, 2002 new area codes will be in effect for northern Indiana. Most internet customers will not be affected by the change. The only exception are customers in the North Judson community. North Judson will be using the new 574 area code & our local number will remain in the 219 area code. This means that the North Judson Customers will have to dial the full 10 digit number (219-828-xxxx).
This will still be a local (no charge) call.

The new area codes do not affect the price of telephone calls made, and they do not change local calling areas. In other words, calls that were local before the area code split remain local after the area code split

Who Does the 219 Area Code Split Affect?
All communities in the central portion of the existing 219 area code, which includes the city of South Bend, will change to 574. The eastern portion, which includes the city of Fort Wayne, will change to 260. The western portion, which includes the city of Gary, will keep the 219 area code. Telephone customers should view the prefix list to determine which telephone prefixes will remain in 219 and which will change to 574 and 260. (Your telephone prefix is the first three digits after your area code.)

Dialing Procedures for the 219, 574 & 260 Areas: Customers can dial 10 digits (area code + seven-digit telephone number) for all local calls made to another area code. Continue to dial local toll and long distance calls the way you do today, using 11 digits (1+ area code + seven-digit telephone number). Calls within the same area code can still be dialed using 7-digits.

An optional dialing period of five months will allow customers time to begin practicing the new area codes. During this period, both the new and the old area codes will work. After the optional dialing period ends, the new area code must be used for all calls.

Emergency 9-1-1 calls will not change.
