Q. What is ISDN?
A. ISDN is a special "digital" phone line. This line is really two phone lines (channels) in one. Each channel (line) has it's own phone number. It is possible to use one channel for internet & the other for telephone calls. It is also possible to use both channels for internet access at the same time. Each channel can connect at 64k (both directions). This allows a net throughput of 128k for systems using both channels. ISDN lines require special (terminal adapter) devices to allow you to use them. Typically you would install a "terminal adapter" in your computer. You could then connect your phones to the out jacks on the adapter. You cannot use the lines without these special adapters. Note: you will be unable to use your phone if you lose power to the adapter /computer.

These adapters cost from $150.00-350.00. Installation of the adapter requires that they be programmed to match the phone line that is installed. Fourway can assist you with this process.

Expect to pay $50.00-$80.00 per month for the ISDN phone line. This may be less than you currently pay for two normal lines that the isdn line may replace.

Most Internet service providers charge extra for an ISDN connection.

Q. What is the connection speed?
A. 56k connections are the most common connection. All of Fourway's primary modems support this. It is important to understand just what 56k means. If a 56k connection is working perfectly, you could expect download speeds of 53k & upload speeds of 33.6k. Unfortunately it is unusual to connect at the optimum speeds. Several things could contribute to connecting at lower rates. The phone line is the most common reason for slower connection speeds. Unfortunately there is little that you can do to change this.

Phone line extensions. There are some devices which allow you to connect your phone line through your electrical outlets. These will cause degradation in the speed that you can connect or may prevent the modems from working at all.

Incompatible or defective modems. If your modem has been working well & suddenly disconnects or connects at slower speeds, it is likely failing or damaged (especially after a thunderstorm). If your modem has never worked well with our system, you may have an incompatible modem. Our system is compatible with most modems, but there are a few modems that do not work well. If yours is incompatible, you may need to replace or upgrade the modem to resolve the problem.

Q. What is a domain name?
A. A domain name is a name that you choose for your web address [ex. www.fourway.net is our domain name]. You can acquire your own domain name & then have a web page & email setup to use that name.
